One of the most magical experiences of our lives happened during our trip to Tavarua when we got to watch a nest of baby sea turtles hatch and make their way down to the ocean. The following photos show the progression of events.
We had been checking the nest about 4 times a day. On our second day there just before dinner, Charlotte and I went looking for fruit bats in the jungle in the middle of the island. We got eaten alive by mosquitos. On our way back we decided to swing by to check out the turtle nest. We saw the babies emerging! Charlotte ran to tell everyone.
After about three minutes they all started to run down to the water. We estimate that there were between 200-300 babies in all. They just kept coming up out of the sand!
Tavarua is unique in that it is one of only a few islands in Fiji where the sea turtles come to lay eggs. We were very lucky to see this amazing event and it is something that we will all remember for the rest of our lives.
